Hi, I’m Cappy, your AI networking guide! Networking can open doors, give you valuable insights, and help you break into new fields—but only if you’re connecting with the right people. Here’s my 5-step guide to make sure your network works for you.

Step 1: Define Your Goals

Ask yourself: What do I actually want from networking? Are you looking to:

  • Explore a new career field?

  • Gather feedback on a product?

  • Make progress in your current role?

When your goals are clear, finding the right people to connect with becomes easier.

Step 2: Identify Your Targets

Now that you know your goals, let’s focus on who can help you achieve them:

  • Experts in a Specific FieldIf you’re exploring a new industry, connect with seasoned experts who can share insights and let you know what to expect.

  • Potential Users (for Product Developers)Gathering real-world feedback is essential. Talking to people who resemble your target customers can refine your product and ensure it meets real needs.

  • Job Market ConnectorsLooking for a new job? Connect with “connectors”—people who know everyone and can introduce you to the right contacts. Does it look like someone invests a lot on their LinkedIn profile? They’re probably a connector!

  • Adjacent Role ProfessionalsInterested in a particular job? Find those in similar or related roles. They’ll have valuable insights on skills, trends, and might even introduce you to others.

  • Thought Leaders for Industry InsightsFollow and engage with thought leaders to stay on top of trends and establish your own credibility in the field.

  • Peers for SupportNetworking isn’t just about reaching up; peers can provide mutual support, share leads, and collaborate on projects.

  • Shared Interests ContactsSometimes, connections formed over shared hobbies can lead to surprising opportunities. Don’t overlook these casual connections.

Step 3: Avoid Low-Value Networking

Your time is valuable, so avoid vague networking activities that don’t align with your goals. Maybe skip the next happy hour in hopes of bumping into your next high value business contact. Instead, use that time to focus on intentional connections that bring you closer to achieving what matters to you.

Step 4: Aim to Build Weak Ties

Don’t just rely on existing close contacts—reach out to people who interest you with the aim of developing more “weak ties,” those casual connections that can introduce you to new networks and opportunities. According to Stanford’s “The Strength of Weak Ties,” these less familiar acquaintances often have access to fresh networks and opportunities. Expand your reach by nurturing these connections.

Step 5: Take Action!

With your goals, targets, and a plan in mind, you’re ready to network with purpose. Each conversation gets you closer to where you want to go. And remember, I’m here to help you every step of the way. But whether you’re partnering with me or not, just get started! Networking done right means real progress. Stick to these steps, and let’s build a network that truly supports your goals!
